Set up your watch

kWhKey's watch app shows your cars, works their controls and, once you have added it at each car, is a Bluetooth key: next to the car it locks and unlocks with no phone and no signal. It is included with the subscription.

Before you start

Step by step

  1. On your phone

    Get the newest kWhKey

Open the Play Store, find kWhKey and tap Update if you see it. A new version can take a while to show up in Google Play - sometimes half an hour or more. If it isn't there yet, try again later.

  2. On your watch

    Install kWhKey on the watch

On the watch, open the Play Store, search for kWhKey and tap Install.

Not showing on the watch? On your phone, open kWhKey's page in the Play Store, tap Install on more devices and choose your watch.

  3. On your phone

    Connect the watch

Open kWhKey on the watch and keep it close to your phone. Then, on the phone, open kWhKey, tap ⋮ at the top of the home screen, then Watch, then Set up watch.

If the phone asks for your fingerprint, face or screen lock, that is kWhKey making sure the phone is yours. The phone then says "Watch registered", and the watch shows your cars by itself. The cars' pictures can take a minute or two to appear.

  4. At each car, on your watch

Make the watch a key for the car

Take the car's key card with you - the black card that came with the car. The car adds a new key only while its key card is on the console: without it you can't prove you own the car, so nobody can add a key from a distance. You do this once for each car.

    1. On the watch, open kWhKey, swipe to the car and tap Controls, then Set up Bluetooth key.
    2. Tap I have my key card. If the watch asks, tap Allow Bluetooth, and turn on Location on the watch: the watch needs it to find the car.
    3. Stand at the driver's door and tap Find my car. When the watch has found the car, tap Pair.
    4. When the watch asks, hold the key card flat on the console, where you tap it to start the car, and keep it there. Then tap Confirm on the car's screen.
    5. The watch says "Done - this watch is now a key for" your car. Lock, unlock, frunk and trunk now work with no phone and no signal when you are next to the car.

On the phone's Watch page, Pair on the watch next to a car opens the same steps on the watch.

  5. In each car, if this watch replaces an old one

Remove the old watch's key from the car

On the car's own screen, open Controls > Locks and delete the old watch's key - the one that isn't your new watch. kWhKey can't take a key off a car, so this is done at the car.

Not sure which key is which? Standing next to the car, open kWhKey on your phone, open the car, then Security > Who can reach (your car's name) > Read the keys at the car. kWhKey's own keys are listed by the name of the phone or watch they belong to.

  6. Later, on your phone

Remove phones and watches you no longer use

Open kWhKey, open one of your cars, then Security > Devices. Tap Remove next to an old watch or phone: it can then no longer reach your cars. Only an owner of the household can remove a device.

If something goes wrong

kWhKey isn't in the watch's Play Store

kWhKey's watch app needs a Wear OS 4 or newer watch, for example a Galaxy Watch4 or newer, or a Pixel Watch. Older Tizen watches like the Galaxy Watch Active2 can't run it, but they still show kWhKey's phone notifications. On a Wear OS watch, install it from your phone instead: kWhKey's page in the Play Store, Install on more devices.

The watch doesn't connect
  • "No watch connected": pair the watch with your phone in the Galaxy Wearable app (the Pixel Watch app for a Pixel Watch), keep it close, and tap Set up watch again.
  • "kWhKey isn't installed on it yet": install kWhKey on the watch (step 2), give it about 10 seconds, then try again.
  • "The watch didn't answer": open kWhKey on the watch so it is awake, then tap Set up watch again.
  • "The watch is still using a key that was removed from kWhKey": open kWhKey on the watch once, then tap Set up watch again.
The car never asks for the key card
  • Stand at the driver's door and keep your wrist up: the search pauses when the watch's screen turns off.
  • If the watch can't find the car, or says the car's Bluetooth is full: the car has 3 phone-key slots, and a phone with the Tesla app nearby keeps one of them busy. Turn Bluetooth off on your phone, and on any other phone with the Tesla app, then tap Try again.
  • If the car didn't add the key, tap Pair again with the card flat on the console, and keep it there until the car asks you to confirm.
  • A car without a kWhKey subscription shows "Subscribe on your phone" on the watch: kWhKey's key is off for that car until an owner subscribes for it.
An old watch or phone is still listed
  • On the car: its key stays until you delete it on the car's screen, Controls > Locks (step 5).
  • In kWhKey: an owner removes it under a car's Security > Devices (step 6).

Each is removed by itself: removing a device in kWhKey doesn't take its key off the car, and deleting the key on the car doesn't remove the device from kWhKey.
