Delete your kWhKey data
You can have your kWhKey household, one of its cars, or your own phone or watch deleted at any time, with what kWhKey keeps for it - with the app or without it.
First: cancel your subscription
Deleting your household does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it in Google Play first, or the store keeps charging. Lifetime access is not refunded when the household is deleted; it can be restored in a new household with the same Google account. How to cancel
On an Android phone
An owner can delete the household in either of two ways.
1. Menu > Delete my data. Open the app's menu and tap Delete my data.
- Owners: Remove one car (not for your last car - delete the household then), or Delete my household (type DELETE to confirm).
- Members - and an owner while another owner's phone or watch stays in the household: Delete this phone.
2. A car's Security tab > Remove this household.
- Open kWhKey and open one of your cars.
- Open Security, then Remove this household.
- Tap Delete my household, type DELETE and tap Delete.
Deleting a household deletes it at once: its cars and their pictures, every phone and watch in it, places, routines, settings, the history of trips and charging, notices, the activity log, the record of what you agreed to, kWhKey's record of your subscriptions, and your sign-in. Removing one car deletes that car, its pictures and its history, and the household's log lines about it; where the household's notices name it, they say "a car that was removed". Either way kWhKey asks Tesla to stop the car sending data to kWhKey. Until Tesla confirms it, for at most 7 days and 10 minutes, kWhKey keeps only the car's VIN and which household it was in and - for a deleted household - an encrypted copy of its sign-in to Tesla, for that alone, and asks again. Then finish at the car, as described at the end of this page.
Deleting a phone or watch removes it from the household and deletes its record, its lines in the activity log, its Bluetooth reports and its Bluetooth key's public half. What it made for the household (a routine, a service record) stays, without its name; where the household's notices and log name it, they say "Deleted device".
By email (everyone)
Owners: write to support@kwhkey.com from the email address of the Tesla account you signed up with, with the subject Delete my kWhKey data. We answer by email and finish within 7 days.
Members of a household: delete your phone yourself in the Android app, as above (a watch cannot be deleted on the watch), or write to us with the same subject, and name your household and your device. We then delete the device's record, its lines in the activity log, its Bluetooth reports and its Bluetooth key's public half. What it made for the household stays, without its name; where the household's notices and log name it, they say "Deleted device". An owner of your household can also remove your phone or watch in the Android app (a car, then Security > Devices): it can then no longer reach the cars, and its Bluetooth reports, its push address and the IP address on its log lines are deleted at once.
What stays behind
Copies stay in the server's logs and backups for a while; every copy is gone within 45 days of the deletion.
- Backups. Every copy of the database on the server - the nightly ones and those made before an update - is deleted before it is 48 hours old.
- The server's own logs. They hold the time and IP address of requests, and lines about what the server did: when a car parked and at which of your places, the text of notices, when a car woke or fell asleep. They are deleted after 14 days.
- What a car sends afterwards. If a car goes on sending after it was deleted, the server keeps nothing of what it sends: it writes one line for each message, with the last six characters of the VIN and the time, and deletes those lines after 30 days.
- Messages the server could not store before the deletion are deleted with the car. One that names the car only by the last six characters of its VIN, which another car in kWhKey shares, stays until its 30 days are up. The program that signs commands for the cars holds a session for each car in its memory until it next restarts.
- What others were told. If your household had friends in kWhKey, the notice that you became friends is deleted from theirs, and their activity log says they were friends with "a household that was deleted". The people who run kWhKey keep a line that a household was set up, with how many cars it had - no name, no VIN and no address.
- What is not kWhKey's. Tesla, Google, the weather service and Cloudflare keep their own records, and your email to us stays in our mailbox.
Finish at the car
Deleting your data in kWhKey does not change your car. To finish, remove kWhKey's key on the car's own screen (Controls > Locks) - and the key of any phone or watch that was a Bluetooth key - and remove kWhKey in the Tesla app (Profile > Security & Privacy > Third-Party Apps).
